The materials are the easy part. What takes thought is understanding how you live in the space before deciding what to do to it.
How Far Does It Go?
Remodeling covers a lot of ground, from an afternoon of trim work to a bathroom that’s out of service for two weeks. Here’s the range, roughly in order.
Finish and detail work
Crown moulding, baseboards, door and window casing, custom millwork. The work that makes a builder-grade room look considered. It’s the least disruptive thing on this page and often the highest impact per dollar — a room with proper trim reads as finished in a way paint alone can’t manage.
Feature walls
Shiplap, board and batten, wainscot, accent walls, fireplace surrounds, custom TV walls with the cables where you can’t see them.
Usually one wall, usually a few days, and it changes the whole room. This is the most common starting point for people who’ve never hired anyone for anything beyond a repair.
Built-ins and custom storage
Entertainment centers, bookcases, mudroom lockers, window seats, home office storage, closet systems.
Built-ins are where custom actually earns its name. Furniture is sized for a warehouse; a built-in is sized for your wall, your ceiling height, and the stuff you own. Once someone has one, they usually want another.
Room-level updates
Bathroom refreshes — vanity, toilet, faucet, mirror, lighting, hardware, paint, and caulking, coordinated as one project instead of six separate errands.
Kitchen improvements — cabinet installation, hardware, backsplash, lighting, and finish work.
Also home offices, laundry rooms, entryways, and other rooms that stopped fitting how you use them.

Photos, screenshots, sketches on the back of an envelope, a link to something you saw in someone else’s house. Pictures communicate what words don’t, especially for style — “modern” means about nine different things and none of us mean the same one.
Two honest caveats. What you’re looking at was probably built in a different room with different dimensions, different light, and a different budget. We’ll tell you which parts translate and which don’t. And we’ll tell you what it would actually cost to get close, before you get attached.

What Older Houses Hide
Remodeling opens things up, and opening things up occasionally finds something.
