Most Doors Don’t Need Replacing.

A door that sticks, drags, won’t latch, or swings open on its own is usually telling you about the frame, the hinges, or the strike — not about the door. We find out which before recommending anything, because the fix is often smaller than people expect.

What the Door Is Telling You

It sticks in summer and behaves in winter. Seasonal movement. The door is fine; the frame is moving with humidity, and the fix is usually planing or an adjustment rather than a new door.

It’s been dragging since you moved in. Different problem. That’s typically hinges that have loosened over years of pull, or a jamb that was never plumb. Doors are heavy and hinge screws work their way out of soft framing.

It won’t latch, or you have to lean on it. The strike plate and the bolt aren’t lined up anymore. Sometimes it’s the door sagging, sometimes the frame settling, and it’s usually a small correction.

It swings open or closed on its own. The frame is out of plumb. There’s a straightforward fix for this that doesn’t involve replacing anything.

There’s daylight around it. On an exterior door that’s weatherstripping, threshold, or a sweep that’s given up — and it’s costing you on the power bill every month it stays that way.

If you want one key to open several doors, there are a few ways to get there. Hardware can be bought keyed alike as a set, most home centers will key new hardware to match, and systems like Kwikset SmartKey let you set the key yourself. We’ll tell you which route fits what you’re buying — and if a bolt won’t throw properly, that’s usually the door, not the lock, which is worth sorting out first.
